Harlan is a small community in Allen County, Indiana, in the United States. It is known as a census-designated place (CDP). This means it's an area that the U.S. Census Bureau identifies for collecting statistics, but it's not an officially incorporated town or city. In 2010, about 1,634 people lived in Harlan.

A Look Back: Harlan's History

Harlan was established in 1853 by a couple named Lewis and Julia Ann Reichelderfer. When it first started, Harlan was actually two separate communities. These were Harlan and another place called Maysville.

The road that separated these two areas was Georgetown Road, which is now known as State Road 37. Harlan was located on the north side of this road. The post office in Harlan has been open since 1851. Maysville eventually disappeared, and Harlan became the main community.

Harlan is located on State Road 37. It is about 15 miles (24 km) northeast of a larger city called Fort Wayne. Harlan is also quite close to the border of Ohio, being about 7 miles (11 km) west of the state line.
