Harlem was officially mapped out, or platted, in 1849. It got its name because it is located right inside Harlem Township. Imagine a time when letters were the main way to communicate! A post office was opened in Harlem way back in 1830. This post office served the community for many years, helping people send and receive mail, until it closed in 1907.
