Harold is a small, unincorporated community in Santa Rosa County, Florida. An unincorporated community is a place that doesn't have its own local government. It is managed by the county.
In 2020, Harold had a population of 909 people. This was a small increase from 823 people in 2010. Harold is part of the larger Pensacola metropolitan area. This means it's connected to the bigger cities nearby.
A special airfield called OLF Harold is also located here. It is used for training by the Navy, specifically for Training Air Wing FIVE from Naval Air Station Whiting Field.
History of Harold
Harold was not always called Harold. It was first known as Oscar. The community of Oscar began around 1881 when its first post office opened. More people moved to Oscar after the Pensacola and Atlantic Railroad was finished in 1883. This railroad helped connect the area to other places.
In the early 1890s, a man named William D. Chipley bought land in the area for lumber. Around this time, the community's name changed from Oscar to Harold.
How Harold Got Its Name
A post office named Harold was officially opened in 1909. It stayed open until 1995. One story says that an early postmaster named the community after his son.
Another story suggests the name came from Ebenezer F. Porter. He was a congressman from Kansas. He also bought land for lumber in the 1890s. He supposedly renamed the area after his son, Harold (who lived from 1891 to 1962).
