Harold Joseph Haley was an American judge. He worked in Marin County, California. He was taken hostage in his courtroom during a trial. He died during an escape attempt by his captors.
Early Life and Career
Harold Joseph Haley was born in San Rafael, California. He went to San Rafael High School. He later studied law at the University of San Francisco School of Law. He graduated in 1928.
After college, he worked as a lawyer for his city. He also served as a lawyer for Marin County. In 1956, he became a judge for a local court. This was by appointment from Governor Goodwin Knight. Later, in 1965, Governor Pat Brown made him a judge for a higher court.
Haley married his high school classmate, Gertrude Ahern. They got married in 1933. They had three daughters together.
Marin County Court Incident
On August 7, 1970, a serious event happened in Judge Haley's courtroom. A person named Jonathan Jackson brought guns into the courtroom. An inmate named James McClain was on trial. Jackson helped McClain and two other inmates escape. These inmates were Ruchell Magee and William Christmas.
Jackson and the inmates took Judge Haley and others hostage. They tried to drive away from the courthouse. During this escape attempt, Judge Haley, Jackson, McClain, and Christmas were killed. Another person, Gary Thomas, was injured and became paralyzed. One of the hostages was also hurt.
A weapon used in the incident was bought by Angela Davis a few days before.
Remembering Judge Haley
Judge Haley is remembered in Marin County. A road there is named Judge Haley Drive. There is also a memorial near a lagoon.
The University of San Francisco School of Law also honors him. They give out the "Judge Harold J. Haley Award." This award is for students who show great skill in their studies and character.
