Harriet Lowry-Corry, Viscountess Belmore facts for kids
Harriet Lowry-Corry, Viscountess Belmore (born Lady Harriet Hobart), lived from 1762 to 1805. She was known for her two marriages to important noblemen of her time. Her first husband was Armar Lowry-Corry, 1st Earl Belmore, and after their divorce, she married William Kerr, who later became the 6th Marquess of Lothian.
Early Life and First Marriage
Harriet Hobart was born on April 7, 1762. Her father was John Hobart, 2nd Earl of Buckinghamshire, a very important person who served as the Lord Lieutenant of Ireland. Her mother was Mary Anne Drury.
On March 2, 1780, Harriet married Armar Lowry. At the time, he was a Member of Parliament (MP). He later became the Earl Belmore. Harriet and Armar had one child together:
- Lady Louisa Mary Anne Julia Harriet Lowry-Corry (born 1781, died 1862). She later married George John Montagu, 6th Earl of Sandwich and had children.
Divorce and Second Marriage
After their daughter was born, Harriet and Armar Lowry-Corry separated. Their marriage officially ended in 1793 through a special law passed by Parliament.
Soon after her divorce, on April 14, 1793, Harriet married William Kerr. He was known as Lord Ancram and was the son and heir of the 5th Marquess of Lothian. William Kerr was also an important figure, serving as the Lord Lieutenant for areas in Scotland.
Family and Inheritance
A year after her second marriage, Harriet's father passed away. She then inherited Blickling Hall and other family lands in Norfolk, England.
Harriet and William Kerr had four children together:
- John Kerr, 7th Marquess of Lothian (born 1794, died 1841)
- Lord Schomberg Robert Kerr (born 1795, died 1825). He was a soldier.
- Lady Isabella Emily Caroline Kerr (born 1797, died 1858)
- Reverend Lord Henry Francis Charles Kerr (born 1800, died 1882). He married Louisa Hope and had children.
Harriet Lowry-Corry died on July 14, 1805, when she was 43 years old. Her husband, William Kerr, later inherited his father's title and became the 6th Marquess of Lothian. He remarried a year after Harriet's death.
