Harriett is a small, quiet place in northeastern Tom Green County, Texas. It is known as an unincorporated community. This means it doesn't have its own local government like a city or town. Instead, it's governed by the county. Harriett is near U.S. Highway 67 and is part of the larger San Angelo, Texas area.

Harriett's Early Days

Harriett started to become a community in 1909. This was when a post office was first set up there. Charles P. Lovelace was the first person in charge of the post office.

The Post Office Story

When the post office first opened, its name was spelled "Harriet." But just one month later, the spelling was changed to "Harriett," with two 't's. This post office served the local people for many years. However, in 1927, it was moved to the nearby city of San Angelo.

Life in Harriett Through the Years

Even though Harriett was a small community, it had some activity over the years. We can learn about its past by looking at old records and maps.

What Was Harriett Like?

In 1936, records show that Harriett had a population of 12 people. There were also two businesses operating in the community. This tells us it was a very small place, but people lived and worked there.

Harriett on the Map

Maps from the 1950s show that Harriett had a church. There were also several other buildings in the area. This suggests it was a small hub for local residents. By 1984, county highway maps still showed Harriett. They marked a railroad station there. About two miles northeast of the community, there was also a cemetery. These features show how Harriett was connected to transportation and served its residents over time.
