Harris Mosdell was born in Bay Roberts in 1883. His father was Thomas Mosdell. Harris went to school in Bay Roberts. He also studied at the University of Toronto in Canada.
From Teacher to Journalist
After finishing his education, Mosdell worked as a teacher for several years. Later, he bought a printing business. He started his own newspaper called the Outlook in Bay Roberts. In 1909, he moved to Toronto. There, he worked as a reporter for newspapers.
A Career in Medicine
While working as a reporter in Toronto, Harris Mosdell also studied medicine. He earned a degree called a Bachelor of Medicine. In 1911, he returned to Newfoundland. He started working as a doctor in a place called Woody Point. Later, in 1930, he received an advanced medical degree, an M.D..
Editor and Public Servant
Mosdell became the editor of important newspapers. In 1914, he edited the Fisherman's Advocate and the Daily Mail. These newspapers were for the Fishermen's Protective Union. Later, he became the editor of the Liberal party's newspaper, the Daily Star. In 1934, he was named a secretary in the government's Department of Public Health and Welfare. This department helped people with their health and well-being.
Political Journey
In 1922, Harris Mosdell was chosen to be part of the Legislative Council of Newfoundland. This was like an upper house of government. He left the council in 1926 to run for a seat in the Newfoundland assembly. He won the election. He also served in the Executive Council. This was a group of top government advisors.
