Harry Mordaunt (born March 29, 1663 – died January 4, 1720) was an important English soldier and politician. He served as an officer in the English Army and was a member of Parliament for many years. He was part of the Whig political group.
Early Life and Education
Harry Mordaunt was born in Parsons Green, Fulham. His father was John Mordaunt, 1st Viscount Mordaunt. His mother was Elizabeth Carey.
Harry went to Westminster School starting in 1676. Later, he studied at Christ Church, Oxford from 1680. He earned his degree in 1684. Harry Mordaunt married twice. His first wife was Margaret Spencer. His second wife was Penelope Tipping.
Military Service
Harry Mordaunt began his army career in 1689. He quickly rose through the ranks. By 1693, he was a captain in the 1st Dragoon Guards.
In 1694, he became a colonel and led his own army group. This group later became a marine regiment. He was also the commander-in-chief on the island of Guernsey in 1697 and 1702.
He led another marine regiment starting in 1702. This group later changed to infantry soldiers. Harry Mordaunt continued to be promoted. He became a brigadier-general in 1704, a major-general in 1706, and finally a lieutenant-general in 1709.
Political Career
Harry Mordaunt was elected as a Member of Parliament (MP) for Brackley in 1692. An MP is a person elected to represent a group of people in the House of Commons, where laws are made. He was re-elected several times for Brackley.
He also held important government jobs. From 1699 to 1702, and again from 1705 to 1712, he was the Treasurer of Ordnance. This role meant he was in charge of money for military supplies like weapons and cannons.
In 1708, he became an MP for Richmond, Yorkshire. He continued to serve as an MP for Richmond until his death. He was also the Treasurer of Ordnance for a third time from 1714 until he died.
Death and Family
Harry Mordaunt passed away on January 4, 1720. He had several children with his first wife. One of his sons was Sir John Mordaunt, who also became a general. Sir John was known for leading a military mission in 1757. Harry Mordaunt had one daughter with his second wife, named Penelope.
