History of Hartford
Hartford was first planned and settled around the year 1817. In the past, it was a busy stop along a stagecoach route. This route connected the towns of Madison and Aurora, making Hartford an important place for travelers.
Life Before the 1937 Flood
Before a big flood in 1937, Hartford had several businesses. There were four mills, which were likely used for grinding grain. The community also had a general store. This store opened in 1978 and stayed open until the mid-1980s.
Hartford's Post Office
A post office was set up in Hartford in 1844. This allowed people in the community to send and receive mail. The post office served the area for many years before it was closed down in 1891.
