The Story Behind Hartland's Name
Hartland was named after two of the very first settlers in the area. These pioneers were William Michael Hart and his wife, Sarah Matilda Land.
Pioneer Journey to California
William and Sarah Hart traveled to California in the early 1850s. They made their long journey in a covered wagon.
Life in the Gold Rush Era
The Harts had five daughters and one son. All of their children were born in the Angel's Camp gold-mining area. Here, the Harts ran a small school for the children of the miners.
Moving Through Tulare County
In the 1870s, the Hart family lived in several towns in Tulare County. These included Venice, Kaweah, Mineral King, Orosi, and Squaw Valley. By the 1880s, they settled in Eshom Valley. The name "Hartland" was created by combining parts of their last names, Hart and Land.
