Discovering Hartley's Past

Hartley has an interesting history, starting long before it became a town.

Early Land Grants and Ownership

Back in 1832, two people named John Charles Beales and Jose Manuel Royella were given the land where Hartley is now. This was part of Mexico and Texas's plan to encourage people to settle there. However, they didn't manage to bring settlers, so they lost their rights to the land.

Later, in 1875, the Texas government offered land to companies that would clear rivers. This helped open up new areas. These companies surveyed the land and received deeds for certain sections. Some of the first land deeds in Hartley County were filed by Beaty, Seale, and Forwood.

How Hartley Became a Town

On July 1, 1888, Beaty, Seale, and Forwood sold a large piece of land, Section 23, to James A. Hudson and John A. Lutz for $10,000. These new owners had big plans for Hartley. They wanted it to grow into a busy city.

They printed flyers and sent them to people in other states, inviting them to move to Hartley. Section 23 was divided into smaller lots for homes and businesses. Soon, a "tent city" appeared as many people arrived, hoping to start a new life in this promising new place.
