History of the Church Building

The First Church of Christ, Scientist started in Davenport in 1892. It began with 16 people who followed the Christian Science faith. They were part of a larger church group based in Boston.

In 1912, this group built the church building you see today. It was designed by a well-known architecture company from Davenport called Clausen & Clausen. The First Church of Christ, Scientist also had a special reading room downtown where people could learn more about their faith.

New Beginnings for the Building

In the 1970s, the First Church of Christ, Scientist moved to a new building on Fairhaven Road in Davenport. After they moved, another church group took over the historic building.

The Harvest Time Family Worship Center was started in 1972 by Reverend James and Cecelia Lee. At first, it was called the Pentecostal Deliverance Church and was located on Fillmore Street. In 1980, this church group moved into the historic building on Kirkwood Boulevard, where it remains today.

Architecture and Design

What Makes the Building Special

The Harvest Time Family Worship Center building has a very clear and strong style called Neoclassical. This style often looks like ancient Greek or Roman buildings. The building's shape is like a cross, which is a common design for churches. This cross shape is one of the few religious symbols you can see in its design.

Looking at the Front of the Church

The main front of the building is very grand. It has a large "temple front" with four columns. These columns are in the Doric order, which means they are simple and strong. The main entrance is set back behind these columns. Above the entrance, there is a beautiful, rounded window called a fanlight.

The entrance itself has three openings. The middle opening is a rounded arch, which is a design often seen in Palladian architecture. In the center of the building, where the cross shapes meet, there is a round tower-like structure called a polygonal belvedere. The building is made of wood and concrete, and its outside is covered with a smooth material called stucco.
