Where Does the Harvest Brodiaea Grow?
This plant grows from a special underground bulb. You can find it naturally in the mountains of California and Oregon. It loves to grow in forests and open grassy areas called meadows.
What Does the Elegant Brodiaea Look Like?
The harvest brodiaea is a perennial plant, which means it lives for more than two years. It grows a strong stem that can reach up to 50 centimeters (about 20 inches) tall. This stem holds many showy flowers.
Flowers and Petals
Each flower hangs on a small stem called a pedicel, which can be up to 10 centimeters (about 4 inches) long. Every flower has six pretty, curving parts called tepals. These tepals are usually bright purple and can be up to 3 centimeters (about 1 inch) long.
In the middle of the flower, you'll see white or light purple parts. Some of these are "fake" stamens, called staminodes. They are flat with pointed or jagged tips and are about half to one centimeter long. Right next to these are the "real" stamens, which have large parts called anthers at their tops. These anthers hold the pollen.
When Does it Bloom?
In Northern California, the Brodiaea elegans is one of the wildflowers that blooms later in the season. You can often see its lovely purple flowers in May.
