The Harvey House in Florence, Kansas, USA, is a very old and important building. It was also called the Clifton Hotel a long time ago. This building was added to the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) in 1973. This means it's a special place worth protecting because of its history.

History of the Harvey House

The building you see today is part of the very first Fred Harvey House. It was built by the Fred Harvey Company. This original building stood near the Santa Fe railroad tracks. It was built to serve passengers traveling by train.

A Special Hotel for Travelers

The Harvey House was a hotel and a place to eat for train passengers. It was special because it was the first Harvey House to offer sleeping rooms. Most others were just eating places. The Harvey House was built in 1876. It closed in 1900, and its operations moved to Newton, Kansas. Today, this historic building is a museum.

Harvey House on TV

  • The Harvey House in Florence was featured on a TV show. It appeared in an episode of Feasting on Asphalt in 2006. The episode was called "High Plains Feaster." The host, Alton Brown, visited the Spring Fling event and the Harvey House.
