Harvey Milk Plaza is a special public space in San Francisco, California. It's located right above the Castro Muni Metro subway station in the city's Castro District. This plaza honors Harvey Milk, who was a very important leader in San Francisco.

History of Harvey Milk Plaza

The Castro Muni Metro subway station opened in 1980. With it came a public plaza that has been used by many thousands of people every day. It helps people get around and visit the Castro neighborhood.

In 1985, this plaza was officially named Harvey Milk Plaza. This was done to remember Harvey Milk, who was a pioneering leader in the United States. He worked hard for equal rights for all people. Sadly, he died in 1978. Important people like Mayor Dianne Feinstein and other city leaders were there for the dedication.

In 1997, a flagpole was added to the plaza. On this pole, the famous rainbow flag flies high. This flag was created by Gilbert Baker. It has become a worldwide symbol of hope and equality for many people.

In 2006, pictures showing different times in Harvey Milk's life were placed in the plaza. These photos help visitors learn more about his journey.

The Castro Muni Metro subway station and Harvey Milk Plaza were designed by an architecture company called Reid & Tarics Associates. Howard Grant was a main designer for the project.

In 2017, new ideas were shared for how to make the memorial even better. A design by Perkins Eastman was chosen to help update the plaza.
