Hasibun Naher is a scientist and teacher from Bangladesh who uses math to solve real-world problems. She is famous for her important research on tsunamis. By using math, she helps find better ways to predict how these powerful ocean waves will behave. This work can help save lives.
In February 2018, she was honored with the OWSD-Elsevier Foundation Award. This award is given to talented young women scientists from developing countries. She is an associate professor of mathematics at BRAC University in Dhaka. In 2019, she was named one of the top 100 scientists in Asia by the Asian Scientist magazine.
Education and Career
Dr. Hasibun Naher earned her Bachelor of Science and Master of Science degrees in Mathematics from Jahangirnagar University in Bangladesh. She achieved first class honors in both degrees.
Later, she traveled to Malaysia to continue her studies. She received her PhD in mathematical sciences from the Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM). While there, she also taught math courses to undergraduate students from 2011 to 2013.
In 2007, Dr. Naher began working at BRAC University. She is now an Associate Professor in the Department of Mathematics and Natural Sciences.
