The Hatcher mango is a special type of mango. It's a popular kind grown for selling, and it first came from south Florida in the United States.

How the Hatcher Mango Began

The very first Hatcher mango tree grew from a seed. It was planted on the land of a plant grower named John Hatcher. This happened in Lantana, Florida, back in the 1940s.

Scientists looked at the Hatcher mango's "family tree" in 2005. They think it's a mix of two other mango types: the Haden and the Brooks.

John Hatcher's farm, where the first tree grew, is still open today! They have been selling Hatcher mangoes and trees for many years. You can even buy these mangoes from their farm and have them shipped all over the country.

Some Hatcher mango trees are also planted in special collections. For example, you can find them at the USDA's plant collection. There are also trees at the Miami-Dade Fruit and Spice Park in Homestead, Florida. These places help keep different types of plants safe and available for study.

What Does a Hatcher Mango Look Like?

When a Hatcher mango is ready to eat, its skin is bright yellow. It often has a pretty pink blush on it too. These mangoes are quite big! They usually weigh more than three pounds, which is heavier than most other mangoes. They have an oval shape and don't have a pointy tip.

The inside of the Hatcher mango is orange-yellow. It's very smooth because it doesn't have any stringy fibers. The taste is mild and sweet, making it a delicious treat.

Inside the fruit, there's one large seed. This type of seed is called monoembryonic, meaning it usually grows only one plant from that seed. Hatcher mangoes are typically ready to pick in Florida during July and August.

The Hatcher mango trees themselves grow very large. They are strong and grow quickly, forming thick, leafy tops.
