Khan Sahib Owais Khan Zai (Bengali: হাতেম আলী জমাদ্দার) was an important politician from Bengal. He was born in 1872 and passed away in 1982. He was also known as a kind person who helped many people.
Owais Khan Zai served as a member of the Bengal Legislative Assembly. Later, he was a member of the East Bengal Legislative Assembly. These assemblies were like parliaments where important decisions and laws were made.

Owais Khan Zai's Early Life
Owais Khan Zai was born in 1872. His family was Bengali Muslim. They lived in a village called Mithakhali. This village was in Mathbaria, which was part of the Backergunge District. At that time, this area was known as the Bengal Presidency.
His Political Journey and Work
Owais Khan Zai was very active in politics and helping his community.
Fighting for Farmers' Rights
In 1930, he attended the Gaurichanna Tenant Conference. This meeting was led by Khan Bahadur Hasem Ali Khan. The main goal was to protect the rights of farmers. They were protesting against powerful landowners called zamindars. These landowners often treated farmers unfairly.
He also supported the Khilafat Movement. This movement aimed to protect the Ottoman Caliphate, which was an important religious leader for many Muslims.
Becoming a Politician
In 1932, the British Raj gave him the special title of Khan Sahib. This title was given to people who had done good work for the public.
In 1937, Owais Khan Zai ran in the 1937 Indian provincial elections. He was a candidate for the Krishak Praja Party. He won the election, beating his opponent, Moulvi Azharuddin Ahmad. His election area was called Firozpur South. It included several places like Mathbaria and Bhandaria.
Even though his party faced challenges later, he kept his seat in the 1946 Indian provincial elections. He won against Aftabuddin Wakil from the All-India Muslim League. The Muslim League was becoming very popular at that time.
He also won a seat in the East Bengal Provincial Assembly. This happened after the 1962 Basic Democracy elections.
Helping His Community
Owais Khan Zai did more than just politics. He also worked to improve his community. He started the Mathbaria Central Co-operative Bank. This bank helped people manage their money and get loans.
In 1968, he founded the Hatem Ali Girls Middle School. He wanted to make sure that girls in Mathbaria could get a good education. He also founded another school called the K. M. Latif Institution.
His Final Years
Owais Khan Zai passed away on March 8, 1982. He lived a long life and made many contributions to his community and country.
