All-India Muslim League facts for kids
The All-India Muslim League was an important political party in British India. It started in 1906 in a city called Dacca (now Dhaka, Bangladesh). This party played a big part in the 1940s during India's fight for independence. It was a main reason why Pakistan was created as a country for Muslims on the Indian subcontinent.
After India and Pakistan became independent countries, the Muslim League split up. The main part of the party went to Pakistan and continued its political work there. In India, the Muslim League became a smaller party, especially in the state of Kerala.
In Pakistan, the League formed the country's first government. However, it split into many smaller groups during the 1950s after the army, led by General Ayub Khan, took control. Since 1947, different parts of the Muslim League have often been in power in Pakistan's governments.
In Bangladesh, the party became stronger in 1976. It won 14 seats in the 1979 elections for the government. But its importance has gone down since then. The League no longer plays a big role in Bangladesh.
In Pakistan, the Pakistan Muslim League (PML) is still one of the main political parties. It has split into several separate groups, like the PML-N and PML-Q, among others.
