Hathorn Hall is a very old and important building at Bates College in Lewiston, Maine. It was built in 1857. This makes it one of the first buildings on the campus. A famous architect named Gridley J.F. Bryant designed it. Hathorn Hall is so special that it was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1970. This means it's officially recognized as a historic landmark.

What Does Hathorn Hall Look Like?

Hathorn Hall is right in the middle of the Bates College campus. It's a rectangular building made of brick. It has three stories, which means it's quite tall. The roof is shaped like a hip roof, which slopes down on all sides. On top of the roof, there's a small tower called a cupola. This cupola holds an open bell tower.

The roof has low, triangular parts called pedimented gables. These are on the shorter sides of the building. The edges of the roof and gables have decorative blocks called modillions. The main entrance is on one of the shorter sides. It has a flat roof supported by fancy columns. These columns are called Corinthian columns and have special carvings.

The History of Hathorn Hall

Hathorn Hall was built in 1857. It was one of the first buildings on the Bates campus. Back then, the school was called the Maine State Seminary. The same architect, Gridley J.F. Bryant, also designed buildings for Tufts University.

The building got its name from Seth Hathorn and Mary Hathorn. They were from Woolwich, Maine. They gave money to help build the hall. The bell in the bell tower was a gift from Jonathan Davis. You can still see "ivy stones" from early classes on the brick walls. These stones were placed by students many years ago.

The inside of Hathorn Hall has changed a lot over time. In 1881, a fire started in the bell tower. This fire caused a lot of damage inside the building. The inside was fixed up again several times. This happened in 1898, then from 1960 to 1962, and again in 1984. The 1984 renovation got $180,000 from the Pew Foundation.

In 1970, Hathorn Hall was added to the National Register of Historic Places. Today, Hathorn Hall is still used by students. It's home to the math and foreign language departments. It also has two computer labs for students to use.
