The Haupiri River is a beautiful river found in the country of New Zealand. It begins high up in the mountains and flows through different areas before joining a bigger river. This river is known for its natural hot springs and is a great spot for fishing.

Where the Haupiri River Flows

The Haupiri River starts its journey in the impressive Southern Alps. Its source is close to Mount Dixon in the Kaimata Range. From there, the river flows towards the north-west. It passes near a lake called Lake Haupiri.

After flowing past the lake, the river turns and heads north-east. It then joins another river, the Ahaura River. The Ahaura River eventually flows into the Grey River. Finally, the Grey River reaches the Tasman Sea at a town called Greymouth. So, the Haupiri River's water travels a long way to the sea!

Natural Hot Springs

One of the most exciting features of the Haupiri River is its natural hot water springs. These springs are located in the upper parts of the river, close to Mount Elizabeth. Hot springs are places where water heated by the Earth's underground warmth comes to the surface.

A long time ago, in the early 1900s, the Tourism Department helped develop these springs. They built structures to make it easier for people to visit and enjoy the warm water. Even though some of these buildings have been damaged over time, you can still go swimming in the springs. To reach them, you need to follow a special walking path called a tramping track. It's important to know that these springs are now on private land.

Fishing for Trout

The Haupiri River is also a popular place for fishing. Many people enjoy catching trout in the upper parts of the river. Trout are a type of fish that live in fresh water, and they are often found in clear, cool rivers like the Haupiri. It's a fun activity for those who love to spend time outdoors and enjoy fishing.
