Welcome to Haute City Center!

Haute City Center is a popular place for shopping and fun in Terre Haute. It's a big building with many different stores inside. You can find clothes, shoes, electronics, and much more here. It's a great spot to hang out with friends and family.

A Look Back: Mall History

How the Mall Started and Grew

The mall first opened its doors in 1968. Back then, it was called Honey Creek Square. Over the years, it got bigger! There were major expansions in 1973 and again in 1981. The mall also got a fresh new look with renovations in 1992 and 2007. When it was renovated in 1992, its name changed to Honey Creek Mall.

In 1983, the city of Terre Haute officially included the land where the mall sits. This meant the mall became a part of the city.

New Owners and a New Name

In 1999, a company called Trammell Crow Faison Regional Mall Services started managing the mall. Then, in 2004, another company named CBL & Associates Properties bought the mall.

Later, in 2019, Out of the Box Ventures became the new owner. On December 16, 2019, the mall got its current name: Haute City Center.

Main Stores: Anchors Away!

Big Stores Then and Now

Shopping malls often have very large stores called "anchor stores." These are usually big department stores that attract many shoppers. At Haute City Center, the main anchor stores are JCPenney, Vendors Village, Seno Formal Wear, and Ulta Beauty.

There are also two big empty spaces that used to be anchor stores. One was a Macy's store, and the other was a Sears. Vendors Village opened in November 2018 in the space that used to be Carson's.

The building on the south side of the mall was first a store called Root Dry Goods. It later became L. S. Ayres in 1998, and then Macy's in 2006. The store that became Carson's started as Meis. Meis moved to the mall from downtown Terre Haute. Later, it became Elder-Beerman.

Why Stores Change and Close

Sometimes, big stores have to close their doors. This can happen if the company that owns them has financial problems.

  • On January 3, 2018, Macy's announced it would close its store at the mall. It closed in March 2018.
  • In April 2018, the company that owned Carson's, called Bon-Ton, faced difficulties and closed all its stores.
  • In October 2018, Sears Holdings also had problems and closed many of its stores, including the one at Honey Creek Mall.

After these closures, JCPenney was the only original big anchor store left. But new stores like Vendors Village have moved in to fill some of the empty spaces.
