Hava Siegelmann is an American computer scientist. She is also a Provost Professor at the University of Massachusetts Amherst. This means she is a very important professor there. She studies how computers can think and learn, much like humans do.
Hava Siegelmann's Journey in Computer Science
Hava Siegelmann studied computer science for many years. She earned her highest degree, a Ph.D., from Rutgers University in 1993. Her main project for this degree was about something called Hypercomputation. This is a special idea about how computers might be able to solve problems that seem impossible for regular computers.
Before her Ph.D., she earned a Master's degree (M.Sc.) in Computer Science. She got this degree from Hebrew University in 1992. Her very first degree in computer science, a Bachelor's (B.A.), was from the Technion in 1988.
Working with DARPA and Important Awards
Hava Siegelmann has worked with DARPA. This stands for the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency. It is a part of the United States government that invents new technologies for the military.
At DARPA, she managed several important programs about AI. These programs included "Lifelong Learning Machines." This project aimed to create AI that could keep learning new things over time. She also worked on "Guaranteeing AI Robustness Against Deception." This project focused on making AI strong and safe from tricks or attacks. Another program was "Cooperative Secure Learning," which helped AI systems work together safely.
Because of her important research and strong leadership, DARPA and the Department of Defense gave her a special award. This award is called the Meritorious Public Service Medal. It is a very high honor for people who do great work for the public.
