The Story of Haviland Thin Mints
Early Beginnings and War Efforts
The history of Haviland Thin Mints goes back a long way, at least to World War II. During this time, they were one of the sweet treats given to soldiers from the United States. A company called Miller and Hollis made them back then.
Changing Hands and Fundraising
Over the years, the ownership of Haviland Thin Mints changed several times. In 1961, a company called Deran Confectionery bought the brand. Later, in 1970, Borden Inc. took over Deran. Borden continued to make these mints for more than 20 years. During the time Deran and Borden owned the brand, the mints were often sold by young people. This was a way for them to raise money to go to YMCA summer camps.
Recent Owners and New Flavors
After Borden, a group called Great American Brands briefly owned Haviland Thin Mints. However, they faced financial trouble. In 1994, the brand was bought by Revere, Massachusetts-based Necco. Necco made the mints for many years.
In 2018, Necco closed down. After this, Haviland Thin Mints, along with another candy called Mighty Malt Milk Balls, were sold to Log House Foods. This company is based in Minnesota and continues to make the popular mints today. Besides the classic mint flavor, Haviland Thin Mints also come in other tasty options, like Raspberry Crème and Orange Crème.
