Havre Boucher is a community in Antigonish County, Nova Scotia, Canada. It is a friendly place known for its beautiful natural harbour.
About Havre Boucher
Havre Boucher gets its name from a natural harbour. This harbour opens up to St. George's Bay in the north. The community has grown quite a bit over time.
It started on the west side of the harbour. Now, it includes several nearby communities. These are Auld's Cove, Cape Jack, East Havre Boucher, West Havre Boucher, Frankville, and Linwood.
Havre Boucher is mostly a rural area. This means it has a lot of open land and fewer big buildings. Many people there work in the fishing industry. The community also serves as a local hub for the surrounding areas.
It used to have its own local government. This was called a "village commission." However, this special status ended in 2018.
A Look Back: History of Havre Boucher
A big change happened in 1955. This was when the Canso Causeway was built. The causeway is a road and railway link across the Strait of Canso. It connects mainland Nova Scotia with Cape Breton Island.
Because of the causeway, the main railway line had to be moved. It used to go from Linwood to Mulgrave. From Mulgrave, trains would take a ferry to Point Tupper.
Now, the railway goes north through Havre Boucher and Cape Jack. It follows the Strait of Canso right to the causeway. A large railway yard was built in Havre Boucher. This yard is still used today by the Cape Breton and Central Nova Scotia Railway.
