Hawise, Duchess of Brittany facts for kids
Hawise of Rennes (Breton: Hawiz Breizh; French: Havoise de Bretagne) was an important ruler in Brittany, a region in France. She was born around 1024-1037 and became the Duchess of Brittany in 1066. She ruled until her death on August 19, 1072.
Hawise was the daughter of Alan III, Duke of Brittany. Her mother was Bertha of Blois. This meant Hawise was part of the powerful House of Rennes family. She had an older brother named Conan II. When Conan II passed away unexpectedly in 1066, Hawise became the Duchess.
Not much is known about Hawise's daily life. She married Hoel of Cornwall sometime before 1058. Hoel helped her rule Brittany. After Hawise died in 1072, Hoel continued to govern as a regent. A regent is someone who rules for a child who is too young to take charge. Hoel was regent for their son, Alan IV.
Hawise's Family and Children
Hawise married Hoel of Cornwall. Together, they had several children:
- Orwen de Cornouailles (born around 1050, died 1103)
- Hildeberge de Cornouaille (born around 1067, died 1095)
- Alain IV Fergant de Cornouaille (born around 1067, died October 19, 1119). He later became the Duke of Brittany and also held the titles of Count of Rennes and Count of Nantes.
