The Hawkes Pharmacy, sometimes called the Rockaway Hotel, is a special old building located at 7 Main Street in York Beach, Maine. It was built in 1902 and is one of the oldest commercial buildings in the village of York Beach that still looks much like it did long ago. This building has a unique style called Tudor Revival and was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1993 because of its importance.

What Does the Hawkes Pharmacy Look Like?

The Hawkes Pharmacy building stands on the west side of Main Street, which is also United States Route 1A. This area is the busy center of York Beach, a popular summer vacation spot on the coast of northern York, Maine.

The building is made of wood and has two floors. Its roof has three large, pointed sections called gables on the front (which faces east). There are also two gables on the south side. These gables are decorated with a style called Tudor Revival half-timbering. This means they have wooden beams that look like a pattern on the outside. They also have fancy wooden trim under the roof edges, called vergeboard, and decorative tips at the very top, called finials.

The middle gable on the front has a curved arch in its center. Below this arch, there's a small balcony that sticks out over the main entrance of the building. On the ground floor, there are two separate spaces that were once used as shops.

A Look Back: History of the Building

The Hawkes Pharmacy building was constructed in 1902 by a father and son team, Wilson and Ralph Hawkes. Wilson Hawkes had already been running a pharmacy in York Beach since 1899.

When the building first opened, the Hawkes family used one of the ground-floor shops for their pharmacy. The other shop was used as a dry goods store, which sold things like fabric and small household items. The owner of the building lived in the apartments upstairs.

Ralph Hawkes continued to run the pharmacy for many years, until the 1940s. Around that time, a fire caused a lot of damage inside the building. After the fire, the building was fixed up and given a new purpose. The upstairs area, which used to be living spaces, was changed into a small hotel.

This building is also special because it's the only known non-home design by architect Fred Watson. He moved to York Beach from New York City in 1899 and mostly designed houses.
