Haydenville was started in 1852. It was named after Peter Hayden, who owned the land. A post office has been open in Haydenville since 1870.

Haydenville was once a "company town." This means one company owned almost everything there. Peter Hayden started the Haydenville Mining and Manufacturing Company in 1882. This company owned all the houses and stores in town.

Workers were paid with special money called "scrip." They could only spend this scrip at the company's own store. If a worker lost their job, they also lost their home. Other stores were not allowed to open in Haydenville. This changed in the early 1960s. A new company bought the town, and workers could then buy their homes.

In 1973, Haydenville became a historic district. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places. This means the community is important to history. Over 120 buildings in the 20-acre area were part of this historic listing.
