Hayland, Nebraska facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Hayland is a small, quiet place in Adams County, Nebraska, in the United States. It's known as an unincorporated community, which means it's a group of homes or buildings that isn't officially a town or city with its own local government. Think of it like a neighborhood that doesn't have its own mayor or town council.

A Look Back at Hayland's History

Hayland began its story in 1912. This was a time when railroads were super important for connecting places and helping communities grow. Hayland started because a railroad was built right through that area.

How Hayland Got Its Name

When it first started, Hayland wasn't called Hayland at all! It was first named Meyersville. But soon, people decided to change the name. They chose "Hayland" because of the big, grassy prairies nearby, which were perfect for growing hay.

Early Days and Important Buildings

In 1917, just a few years after it began, only about 15 people lived in Hayland. Even though it was small, it had some important places.

The Post Office and Bank

A post office opened in Hayland in 1914. This was a big deal because it helped people send and receive letters and packages. It stayed open for many years, finally closing in 1943. A bank also opened its doors on August 1, 1913, helping the community with money matters.

The School and Population Changes

Hayland also had a school, which was important for educating the children living there. However, the school closed in 1942. At its busiest time, Hayland had about 50 people living there. But over time, people moved away, and the community became what's known as a ghost town. This means most of the buildings are empty, and very few, if any, people live there anymore.
