The Hayward House is a really old and important house in Colchester, Connecticut. It was built way back in 1775! This house has seen many interesting people live there.

One famous person was Nathaniel Hayward, a clever inventor. He helped create a special way to make rubber stronger, called vulcanization. Because of its history and unique style, the Hayward House was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1972.

Discover the Hayward House

The Hayward House stands proudly in the middle of Colchester village. You can find it on the north side of Hayward Avenue. It's a great example of an 18th-century home.

What Does It Look Like?

This house is a three-story building made of wood. It has a special kind of roof called a gambrel roof. A big chimney sits right in the center of the house. There's also a porch across the front where people can relax.

Look closely at the roof, and you'll see three small windows sticking out. These are called dormers. The front of the house has five window sections, with the main door in the middle. This door has fancy columns and a decorated top.

Longer sections, called ells, stretch out from the back of the house. On the left side, there's a unique bay window with many sides. A screened porch is on the right side. In the past, a fancy Victorian porch was added to the front, but it has since been removed.

A Peek into Its Past

The Hayward House was built around 1775. A local builder named Abel Amos constructed it for Dudley Wright. When it was new, it was one of the biggest and most beautiful homes in the village.

Dudley Wright used the house as a tavern, a place where people could eat and drink. He also let the local Masonic lodge hold their meetings there. They met in a large ballroom on the second floor.

Later, Dudley Wright's daughter married Doctor John Watrous. He was a well-known doctor in the area. He was also famous for helping his community and giving to charity.

In 1842, the house got a new owner: Nathaniel Hayward. He was a famous inventor from the 1800s. Nathaniel Hayward was the founder and main owner of the Hayward Rubber Company. He played a big part in making rubber useful for many things we still use today!
