Heartlands Cornwall, also known as Heartlands, was a special place in Pool, Cornwall, England. It was a visitor attraction and a gateway to a World Heritage Site. People called it Cornwall's first free cultural playground.
This large park was built on 19 acres of land. It was located at the old Robinson Shaft of the South Crofty mine. This area was once a very important part of Cornwall's mining history. The park's theme was all about mining and the Cornish diaspora. This means it celebrated the history of Cornish miners and people who moved from Cornwall to other parts of the world.
The project received money from the National Lottery. After 14 years of planning, Heartlands opened its doors on April 20, 2012. However, in 2014, the park faced problems. It almost closed because not enough visitors came, and it didn't make enough money. The team had to change their plans and reduce staff.
On January 5, 2024, Heartlands announced it would close due to financial difficulties. The museum, soft play area, conference center, and café closed the following month. However, some independent shops at the site remained open. The Heartlands Trust, which ran the park, officially closed on April 24, 2024. The park's ownership then transferred to Cornwall Council.
Activities at Heartlands
Heartlands offered different activities for visitors. It had a museum where people could learn about Cornwall's mining past. There was also a soft play center, which was a fun indoor area for younger children. The site also included a café and a conference center for events.
Parkrun Events
A special event called a parkrun took place at Heartlands every Saturday. A parkrun is a free, weekly, 5-kilometer run or walk. People of all ages and abilities can join in. It's a great way to stay active and meet others in the community.
