A Look Back: Heaton's History
Heaton was once known as Maricopa Station. It was an important stop along the railroad tracks. People traveling by train would get off here. Then, they would switch to a stagecoach to continue their journey.
The post office in this area was simply called Maricopa. In the late 1880s, there was a big interest in buying land. People thought this railroad stop would become a direct connection to the city of Phoenix.
Because of this idea, plans were made to expand the area into a town. The new town was going to be called Maricopaville. However, in 1887, the railroad line connected to a different place instead. This place is now known as Maricopa.
Since the direct rail connection didn't happen, the plans for Maricopaville were stopped. The name of the community was then changed to Heaton, which it is still called today.
