Hebe albicans is a type of flowering plant that belongs to the Plantaginaceae family. It is originally from New Zealand. This plant is an evergreen shrub, which means it keeps its leaves all year round.
It can grow to be about 60 centimeters (2 feet) tall and 90 centimeters (3 feet) wide. The plant has thick, bluish leaves. These leaves are usually between 1.5 and 3 centimeters long. They are also about 8 to 15 millimeters wide.
Small white flowers grow on this plant. They appear on flowerheads that are 3 to 6 centimeters long. You can usually see these flowers from December to April. The name albicans comes from Latin and means "off-white." This refers to the color of its flowers.
Where Does It Grow?
Hebe albicans is found in the mountains near a place called Nelson, New Zealand. It grows at high altitudes, usually between 1000 and 1400 meters (about 3,280 to 4,600 feet) above sea level.
There is another plant, Hebe amplexicaulis, that is very similar to H. albicans. This related species grows in a similar mountain environment. You can find Hebe amplexicaulis in the Canterbury Region of New Zealand.
Growing Hebe albicans
This plant is quite special! It has received an important award called the Royal Horticultural Society's Award of Garden Merit. This award means it is a great plant for gardens.
Hebe albicans is a tough plant. It can survive in cold temperatures, even down to about -5 degrees Celsius (23 degrees Fahrenheit). However, it likes a spot that is protected from strong winds. It grows best in full sun or a little bit of shade.
