Hebesu (pronounced "heh-beh-soo") is a small, green citrus fruit that grows in Japan. It has a sour taste, like a lemon or lime, and is known for having a special plant chemical called a flavonoid. Some studies suggest this flavonoid might have properties that are good for your health.

About Hebesu

Hebesu is considered a special food in the area of Hyūga, Miyazaki in Japan. It's a bit like other Japanese citrus fruits you might know, such as kabosu and sudachi. However, Hebesu is not as well-known outside of the Miyazaki Prefecture where it grows.

A Little History

People believe that Hebesu was first discovered a long time ago, during the Edo period in Japan. A man named Chōsokabe Heibei found the fruit and started growing it on his land. The fruit was named after him, and "Hebesu" actually means "Hebe's vinegar."

Where and When It Grows

Hebesu fruits are grown in two main ways. Some are grown in special greenhouses, which means you can find them earlier in the year, starting around June. Other Hebesu fruits are grown outdoors, and these are ready to be picked and sold from the end of July until October.

What Makes It Special?

Scientists have studied the oils found in the peel of the Hebesu fruit. These studies help us learn more about the fruit's unique properties and what makes it different from other citrus fruits.
