Hector Mor Maclean (born around 1600, died 1626) was an important leader in Scottish history. He was the 16th Clan Chief of Clan MacLean. His full name in Scottish Gaelic was Eachann Mór Maclean. The word Mór means "great," so he was also known as "Hector the Great."
Hector Mor lived at Duart Castle on the Isle of Mull in Scotland. He became the clan chief in 1623 and led his clan until his death in 1626. He was unique because he was the first chief in 400 years not to have children. This meant the direct family line from the clan's founder, Gillean of the Battle Axe, changed. After Hector Mor passed away, his younger brother, Lachlan Maclean, 1st Baronet, became the next chief.
Becoming a Clan Chief
Hector Mor Maclean was the first son of Hector Og Maclean, 15th Clan Chief. His mother was Janet MacKenzie of Kintail. Her father was Colin Mackenzie of Kintail.
When his father died in 1623, Hector Mor took over as the Clan Chief. This meant he was the main leader of the MacLean family and its people.
Family and Successor
Hector Mor Maclean married Margaret Macleod. She was the oldest daughter of Sir Roderick Macleod of Macleod.
Sadly, Hector Mor died in 1626 without having any children. Because of this, his younger brother, Lachlan Maclean, 1st Baronet, became the next Clan Chief.
