The Sweet Story of Heide Candy
How It All Began
The Henry Heide Candy Company started way back in 1869. It was founded by Henry Heide, who came from Germany.
One of their most famous candies, Jujyfruits, began being made in 1920. At first, Jujyfruits came in flavors like lilac, violet, and rose. Later, the rose and spearmint flavors were changed to cherry and lime. Today, you can find Jujyfruits in lemon (yellow), anise (black), orange (orange), lime (green), and raspberry (red).
Jujyfruits and another gummy candy called Jujubes were very popular at movie theaters. Henry Heide passed away in New York City in 1931.
New Leadership and Locations
After Henry Heide, his son Andrew Heide took over the company in 1957. He was the fourth president of the company. Andrew moved the candy-making factory from New York City to New Brunswick, New Jersey. Andrew Heide passed away in 1995.
Andrew's son, Philip Heide, joined the company in 1964. He worked his way up through different jobs. In 1995, Philip sold Henry Heide, Inc., to a company called Hershey Foods Corporation.
Joining Other Candy Makers
In 2002, another company, Farley's & Sathers Candy Co., bought the Heide brand and its candies, including Jujyfruits, from Hershey Foods. Later, in 2012, Farley's & Sathers joined with Ferrara Pan of Chicago. Together, they formed the Ferrara Candy Company. This is why Heide Candy Company is now part of Ferrara Candy Company.
