History of Heide Candy
How It All Started
The Henry Heide Candy Company began in 1869. It was started by Henry Heide. He came to the United States from Germany.
Popular Candies Emerge
One of their most famous candies, Jujyfruits, started being made in 1920. The first flavors were lilac, violet, rose, spearmint, and lemon. Later, rose and spearmint flavors changed to cherry and lime. Today, Jujyfruits come in lemon (yellow), anise (black), orange (orange), lime (green), and raspberry (red). These candies were very popular in movie theaters. Another gummy candy, Jujubes, was also a big hit. Henry Heide passed away in New York City on December 13, 1931.
New Leadership and Location
Henry's son, Andrew Heide, took over the company. He became the fourth president in 1957. Andrew moved the candy factory from Hudson Street in New York City. The new production facility was set up in New Brunswick, New Jersey. Andrew Heide passed away on December 23, 1995.
Changing Hands
Andrew's son, Philip Heide, joined the company in 1964. He worked his way up through different roles. Philip eventually became the executive vice-president. In 1995, Philip sold Henry Heide, Inc., to Hershey Foods Corporation.
In 2002, Farley's & Sathers Candy Co. bought the Heide brand. This included all its products, like Jujyfruits, from Hershey Foods. The details of this deal were not shared. Later, in 2012, Farley's & Sathers joined with Ferrara Pan of Chicago. This merger created the Ferrara Candy Company.
