Jujubes are a popular type of chewy candy. They are often called "jube," "jubejube," or "juju." These candies are known for their firm, gummy texture, similar to a gummy bear. They come in many different fruit flavors and bright colors.
The Sweet History of Jujubes
The idea for chewy jujube candies goes way back! In 1709, a recipe for "pate de jujubes" was published. This early version used gum arabic, sugar, and the actual jujube fruit, which is a date-like fruit.
Later, around 1853, candy makers started selling "ju ju paste" and "ju ju drops." Over time, the recipes changed. Instead of using the jujube fruit, candy makers began adding different fruit flavors to create the colorful candies we know today.
