Jujyfruits facts for kids
Jujyfruits are a fun, chewy candy that are a bit like gumdrops. They are made by the Heide Candy Company, which is part of the Ferrara Candy Company. Jujyfruits were first made way back in 1920. They became super popular at movie theaters, just like another chewy candy called Jujubes.
What are Jujyfruits Like?
Jujyfruits come in seven different shapes. These shapes are a bundle of asparagus, a Banana, a bundle of grapes, a pea pod, a Pineapple, a Raspberry, and a Tomato. You can even spot the word "HEIDE" stamped on the banana-shaped candies!
The flavors of Jujyfruits match their colors, not their shapes. For example, the red candies taste like raspberry. The black ones have a unique anise or licorice flavor. Green Jujyfruits taste like lime, orange ones taste like orange, and yellow ones taste like lemon.
These candies are quite firm. They can get even harder if they get old or if you put them in the fridge. There's also a sour version of Jujyfruits if you like a tangy treat!
Did you know? Until 1999, the green Jujyfruits used to be mint flavored. But after asking customers what they liked, the company changed them to lime flavor. Most people preferred lime!
What's in Jujyfruits?
Jujyfruits are made with several ingredients that give them their chewy texture and sweet taste. Here's what you'll find in a box of Jujyfruits:
- Corn syrup
- Sugar
- Modified and unmodified cornstarch (this helps make them chewy!)
- Natural and artificial flavors
- White mineral oil
- Carnauba wax (this makes them shiny!)
- Caramel color
- Artificial colors like Yellow 6, Blue 1, Yellow 5 and Red 40
Fun Promotions!
In the 1970s, Jujyfruits had a cool promotion. If you sent in five dollars and a special token from a Jujyfruits carton, the Heide Candy Company would send you a brass belt buckle and a leather belt! It was a fun way to get a prize from your favorite candy.
