Jujyfruits facts for kids
Jujyfruits are a type of chewy, soft candy, similar to gumdrops. They are made by the Heide Candy Company, which is part of the Ferrara Candy Company. Jujyfruits have been around for a long time, first made in 1920. They became very popular in movie theaters, often enjoyed alongside another chewy candy from Heide called Jujubes.
What Are Jujyfruits?
Jujyfruits come in several fun shapes. These include a bundle of asparagus, a Banana, a bundle of grapes, a pea pod, a Pineapple, a Raspberry, and a Tomato. If you look closely at the banana shape, you'll see "HEIDE" stamped on it.
The flavors of Jujyfruits match their colors, not their shapes. For example:
- Red candies taste like raspberry.
- Black candies have an anise or licorice flavor.
- Green candies taste like lime.
- Orange candies taste like orange.
- Yellow candies taste like lemon.
These candies are usually firm. They can get even harder if they are old or kept in a cold place. You can also find a sour version of Jujyfruits if you like a tangy treat!
For many years, the green Jujyfruits were mint flavored. But in January 1999, the company that owned Heide at the time, Hershey, changed them to lime. They made this change after asking customers what they preferred, and most people didn't like the mint flavor as much.
What Are Jujyfruits Made Of?
As of early 2024, the main ingredients in Jujyfruits are:
- Corn syrup: A sweet liquid used to make candies chewy.
- Sugar: For sweetness.
- Modified and unmodified cornstarch: This helps give the candies their chewy texture.
- Natural and artificial flavors: These give Jujyfruits their different tastes.
- White mineral oil: Used to keep the candies from sticking together.
- Carnauba wax: A natural wax that gives the candies a shiny coating.
- Caramel color: Used to give some candies a brown color.
- Artificial colors: These are used to make the candies bright and colorful. Examples include Yellow 6, Blue 1, Yellow 5, and Red 40.
Jujyfruits Promotions
In the 1970s, Jujyfruits had a special offer for their fans. If customers sent five dollars and a special token from a Jujyfruits box to the Heide Candy Company, they would receive a cool brass buckle and a leather belt in return. It was a fun way for people to show they loved Jujyfruits!
