Candy Raisins facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Candy Raisins are a unique, soft candy. They are a type of jujube, which is a chewy, gummy sweet. These candies are very popular in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, in the United States. They were first made in the 1930s. Production stopped in 2008, but luckily, they came back in 2014!

What Are Candy Raisins?

You might think Candy Raisins taste like actual raisins. But they don't! They are called "raisins" because their tops look a bit wrinkled. This makes them look like dried fruit. People describe their flavor in many interesting ways. Some say they taste like honey or ginger. Others mention unique flavors like lilac, perfume, or even soap! It's a taste you have to try for yourself.

The History of Candy Raisins

Candy Raisins have a long history. They first appeared in the 1930s. At that time, a few different companies made them. Two companies were in Milwaukee, and one was in San Francisco.

In 1939, a company called Stark Candy from Milwaukee bought one of the original companies. Stark Candy then made these candies for many years. They even got a special patent for the recipe in 1976. This meant their recipe was protected.

Stark Candy kept making Candy Raisins until 2008. In 1988, a larger company called Necco bought Stark Candy. Necco continued to make the candies at the Wisconsin factory. However, the factory closed in 2008, and Candy Raisins stopped being made.

The Return of Candy Raisins

Many fans missed Candy Raisins. So, in 2014, an entrepreneur named John Barker decided to bring them back! He was from Delafield, Wisconsin. John Barker invested over $1,000,000 into his new company, Lake Country Candies. He bought the rights to the name and the original recipe from Necco. Thanks to him, Candy Raisins are now available again for everyone to enjoy!
