What Are Candy Raisins?
Even though they were called "Candy Raisins," they weren't actually made from raisins! They got their name because their tops looked wrinkly, just like real raisins. People described their taste in many different ways, like honey, ginger, or even a bit like perfume or soap!
The Story of Candy Raisins
Early Days
The story of Candy Raisins began in the 1930s. A company called George Ziegler Candy Company started making them. In 1939, another Milwaukee company, Stark Candy, bought one of the companies that made Candy Raisins. Stark Candy even got a special patent for the recipe in 1976. They continued to make the candy for many years.
Changes Over Time
In 1988, a company called Necco bought Stark Candy. Necco kept making Candy Raisins at the Wisconsin factory until 2008, when the factory closed. This meant Candy Raisins were no longer being made.
A Sweet Comeback
But the story didn't end there! In 2014, a person named John Barker from Delafield, Wisconsin, decided to bring Candy Raisins back. He started his own company, Lake Country Candies, and spent a lot of money to get the rights to the candy's name and recipe from Necco. He wanted to make sure people could enjoy these unique candies again.
The End of an Era
On May 3, 2023, Lake Country Candies announced on their Facebook page that the company making the candy for them would stop. They tried to find a new company to make Candy Raisins but couldn't. They told their customers that the last batch of candies would be gone by the fall of 2023.
On October 17, 2023, Lake Country Candies shared another update on Facebook. They said their final stock of Candy Raisins was almost gone. They encouraged people to order quickly before they ran out. The website for ordering shut down on Sunday, October 22, 2023. As of August 2025, the company's website, lakecountrycandies.com, no longer works.
What's Next for Candy Raisins?
There's still hope for Candy Raisins! In 2024, a candy fan and producer bought the rights to the candy. They are currently working to bring Candy Raisins back to stores.
