Heinrich Gross (born November 14, 1915 – died December 15, 2005) was an Austrian psychiatrist and medical doctor. He was known as a leading expert in his field. During World War II, he worked at a special clinic for children for two years.
Early Life and Education
Heinrich Gross was born in Vienna, Austria, on November 14, 1915. His parents, Karl and Petronella Gross, worked in the clothing business. His father passed away before Heinrich was born. His mother sent him to a Catholic boarding school for his early education.
He finished public high school in 1934. He then studied medicine at the University of Vienna. He earned his medical degree in 1939.
In 1932, Gross became a member of the Hitler Youth. This was a youth group in Germany. He also joined the Sturmabteilung in 1934. These groups were not allowed in Austria between 1934 and 1938. After Germany took control of Austria in 1938, Gross joined the Nazi Party.
Career After the War
After World War II, Heinrich Gross continued his medical work. In 1955, he became a specialist in nervous and mental diseases. He worked as a doctor at a hospital and nursing home called Am Steinhof.
By 1957, he became a chief court psychiatrist. This meant he helped the justice system with cases involving mental health. In 1968, he was put in charge of a special research center. This center studied problems of the nervous system.
Gross was a very active court expert in Austria for many years. He reviewed many cases. In 1975, Austria gave him a special award for his work in science and art. However, this award was taken away from him in 2003.
Later, it became known that he was involved in some illegal actions during the Nazi period. He lost many of his awards. He continued to work as a court expert until 1997. At that time, he came under investigation.
Later Years and Passing
In 1999, a trial began for Heinrich Gross. However, the trial was stopped in 2000. This was because he had health problems, including dementia and Parkinson's disease. Heinrich Gross passed away on December 15, 2005, at the age of 90.
