Heinrich Gutkin was born in Tallinn, Estonia, on June 13, 1879. At that time, Tallinn was part of the Russian Empire. He grew up to be a very successful businessman.

Business and Community Work

Heinrich Gutkin owned a clothing store in Tallinn. He was also the chairman of the Jewish Union Bank in Tallinn. This bank helped people in the Jewish community with their money.

He was a founding member of the Estonian Chamber of Commerce and Industry. This group helped businesses in Estonia grow and work together. He was part of this important group from 1925 to 1937.

Gutkin also led the Jewish Cultural Self-Administration Office. This office helped keep Jewish culture and traditions alive in Estonia.

A Voice in Parliament

On February 3, 1937, Heinrich Gutkin was chosen for a very important role. He became a representative in the Upper Chamber of the National Parliament. This was like being a senator or a high-level government official.

It was a special moment because he was the first Jew to be appointed to this important part of the Estonian government. He helped make decisions for the whole country.

Later Years

Sadly, Heinrich Gutkin's life ended in a difficult way. On June 14, 1941, he was arrested by Soviet security services. His belongings were taken away. He was sent to a prison camp in the Soviet Union. He passed away there on October 11, 1941, in Sverdlovsk Oblast.
