The Heinsbergen Decorating Company Building is a special historic building in Los Angeles, California. It is also known as the AT Heinsbergen & Company Building. This building was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1984. This means it is an important place worth protecting.

A Unique Castle-Like Building

This building looks a bit like a castle! It was built in 1928 for a famous artist named Anthony Heinsbergen. He was known for painting large pictures called murals. The building was designed by architects Curlett & Beelman. They used a mix of styles called Late Gothic Revival and Romanesque. These styles make the building look strong and old-fashioned.

Some cool parts of the building include its round tower. There's also a beautiful mural painted inside the tower's archway. Look closely, and you'll see detailed carvings called friezes. These carvings show artists busy at work! It's a neat way to show what the building was used for.

Did you know that this building was made with bricks from the old Los Angeles City Hall? Anthony Heinsbergen was working on murals for the new City Hall at the time.

History of Heinsbergen's Art Company

For over 50 years, this building was the main office for Heinsbergen's mural painting business. His company, called Heinsbergen Decorating Company, was very big. It had 185 artist painters! They created amazing murals for many places. These included grand movie theaters, often called movie palaces, and other important buildings.

Some of their famous works can be seen in places like:

In Los Angeles, you can still see Heinsbergen's murals today. Look for them at the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel and the Beverly-Wilshire Hotel. You can also find them at Los Angeles City Hall and the Wiltern Theatre. There's even a ceiling mural at El Portal de La Paz Mausoleum in Whittier.

After Anthony Heinsbergen passed away, his children kept the business going. They continued to work from the Beverly Boulevard building. They even helped restore many of the murals their father had painted years before.

New Life for a Historic Building

The Heinsbergen Building was recognized as a historic place in 1984. Later, it changed from an art studio to a place for shops. For a while, it was home to "Lloyd Klein Couture." This was a fancy clothing store by New York fashion designer Lloyd Klein. Even though the store's name was on the building, you could still see "Heinsbergen Decorating" above the main door.

In 2013, another fashion designer, Claire Pettibone, moved her main store into the Heinsbergen Building. Her Flagship Salon opened there on July 10, 2013. This shows how old buildings can find new uses while still keeping their history alive!
