Heinz Vollmar was a talented German football player born on April 26, 1936. He passed away on October 12, 1987. Heinz was known as a tricky winger who played mostly on the left side of the field. He was a forward, meaning his main job was to score goals for his team.
What makes Heinz Vollmar special is that he played for two different national teams during his career. First, he played for Saarland, and later he represented West Germany. This was quite unusual for a football player!
Playing for Saarland
After World War II, the region of Saarland was under French protection. It had its own football team, separate from Germany. Heinz Vollmar was a citizen of Saarland during this time.
He proudly wore the Saarland colours in four international matches. In these four games, he scored four goals, which is a fantastic record! His last game for Saarland was on June 6, 1956. They played against the Netherlands in Amsterdam and lost 3-2, but Heinz scored one of Saarland's goals.
This final match for Saarland was under the coach Helmut Schön. Interestingly, less than a month later, Heinz would play his first game for West Germany under a different famous coach, Sepp Herberger.
Joining West Germany's Team
In 1955, the people of Saarland voted to join West Germany. This meant that Saarland would no longer have its own separate national football team. Because of this change, Heinz Vollmar became eligible to play for West Germany.
His first game for West Germany was on June 30, 1956. It was an away match against Sweden in Stockholm. Heinz went on to play a total of 12 games for West Germany. He scored his first goal for the team six months later against Belgium. He scored three goals in total for West Germany.
World Cup Adventure
Even though a year had passed since his last game for West Germany, Heinz Vollmar was still a very important player. He was chosen to be part of the West German squad for the 1962 FIFA World Cup. This is a huge honor for any football player, as it means you are among the best players in your country.
