Hel is a powerful goddess in Norse mythology. She is often described as the daughter of the trickster god Loki and a giantess named Angrboða. She also has two famous brothers: the giant wolf Fenrir and the world serpent Jörmungandr.
When the gods decided what roles everyone would have, Odin, the chief god, sent Hel to rule over a part of the underworld. This realm was meant for those who did not die bravely in battle.
Hel is sometimes described as having a unique appearance. Half of her body might look like a living person, while the other half looks like a corpse. This shows her connection to both life and death.
Hel's Realm
The realm of Hel is often called Helheim or just Hel. It is one of the nine worlds in Norse cosmology. This dark and misty place is located far to the north and is guarded by a fierce dog named Garmr.
People who died from sickness, old age, or accidents would go to Hel's realm. It was not a place of torture like some other underworlds. Instead, it was a gloomy and cold place where the dead continued a shadowy existence.
The path to Hel's realm is long and difficult. It crosses a bridge called Gjallarbrú, which is guarded by a giantess named Móðguðr.
