Helen Chan Wolf is a super important person in the world of artificial intelligence (AI). She helped create technology that teaches computers to recognize human faces. She also worked on Shakey the robot, which was the very first robot that could move around and think on its own!
Her Amazing Work in AI
In the early 1960s, Helen Chan Wolf worked with other smart people like Charles Bisson and Woody Bledsoe. They were trying to teach computers how to recognize human faces. This is called automated facial recognition.
Teaching Computers to See Faces
At first, humans helped the computers. They would point out features on faces, like the corners of eyes or the mouth. Then, the computer would use these points to learn and recognize faces. This early work helped computers start to "see" and understand images.
Building Smart Robots
In 1966, Helen joined the Artificial Intelligence group at SRI International. This is where she worked on a super cool project: Shakey the robot. Shakey was the world's first robot that could move around and think by itself!
Shakey was special because it used artificial intelligence. It could make its own plans, move from one place to another, and even learn from its experiences. Helen helped create the special computer programs that allowed Shakey to understand images and find its way around.
Before Shakey, no one had ever put AI and robotics together in a moving machine. Shakey was so important that it was honored in 2017 by the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers. It showed the world what smart robots could do!
