Helen Frances Cullen (born January 4, 1919 – died August 25, 2007) was an American mathematician. She was an expert in a field of math called topology.

Helen Cullen worked for many years as a professor of mathematics at the University of Massachusetts Amherst. She was the very first woman to be a faculty member in the math department there. She also wrote a well-known book called Introduction to General Topology in 1968.

Early Life and Education

Helen Cullen was born in Dorchester, Massachusetts. She went to school at the Boston Latin School and then attended Radcliffe College.

She continued her studies at the University of Michigan. She earned her master's degree in 1944. Later, she completed her Ph.D. (a very high-level degree) in 1950. Her Ph.D. research was about complex math ideas, and her supervisor was Wilfred Kaplan.

Teaching Career

Helen Cullen started teaching at the University of Massachusetts Amherst in 1949. She taught math there for many years. She retired in 1992 as a professor emerita, which means she was a respected professor who had retired.

Achievements and Recognition

In 1998, the Boston Latin School recognized Helen Cullen as one of their outstanding former students. This shows how much she achieved in her life and career.
