Helen Mary Coaton was born in 1911 in a city called Leicester, England. She went to school at the Wyggeston School for Girls in Leicester. After that, she studied history at Bristol University.

Becoming a Sculptor

After finishing her history degree, Helen decided to follow her passion for art. She joined the Leicester College of Art. There, she learned how to create sculptures from a teacher named Percy Brown. She studied with him from 1937 to 1942.

In 1942, Helen's artistic talent was recognized. She won the Hinton Prize from the Leicester Society of Artists. She was a very active member of this group. Helen was also part of another important art group called the Artists' International Association.

Exhibiting Her Art

Helen Mary Coaton often showed her sculptures to the public. She exhibited her artwork, which included pieces made from wood, stone, and bronze. She displayed her art with both the Leicester Society of Artists and the Artists' International Association.

For a while, Helen lived in Chelmsford in Essex. Later, she moved to Surrey, where she passed away in 2005. Today, you can see examples of her amazing sculptures at the New Walk Museum in Leicester.
