Helena Amélia Oehler Stemmer was born in a city called Porto Alegre in Brazil on November 11, 1927.

She studied civil engineering at the Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul (UFRGS). She finished her studies and graduated in 1954.

Her Career as an Engineer

On May 15, 1955, Helena married a fellow student from her university. Soon after, she started working at a company called Azevedo Bastian Castilhos S/A Construções. Helena and her husband had a son named Marcelo.

Later, her husband, who was a leader at the Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina (UFSC), went to Germany for a study trip. He visited the Technical University of North Rhine-Westphalia in Aachen.
