Her Early Political Work

Helene Hale started her political career in Hawaii. From 1955 to 1963, she worked on the County of Hawaii Board of Supervisors. This group helped manage the county.

Then, from 1963 to 1965, she became the County's Chairman and Executive Officer. This job was like being a mayor. In this role, she made history. She was the very first woman to serve as a mayor in Hawaii.

Starting the Merrie Monarch Festival

In 1963, Helene Hale had a great idea. She was the Executive Officer of Hawaii at the time. She wanted to create a special event. This event would help bring more visitors to the Island of Hawaii.

This idea led to the start of the Merrie Monarch Festival. Today, it is a very famous festival. It celebrates Hawaiian culture, especially hula dancing.

Later Years in Politics

Helene Hale continued to be active in politics. In 2000, when she was 82 years old, she won another election. She became a member of the Hawaii House of Representatives. She was a part of the Democratic Party.

She worked in the legislature for six years. She represented the 4th district. In 2006, she decided to retire from her political work.

Her Family Background

Helene Hale came from a diverse family. She was multiracial. Her family had a history of important achievements.

Her grandfather was the first African-American person to graduate from the University of Minnesota. Her uncle was Ralph Bunche. He was the first African American to win the Nobel Peace Prize.
