Helga Vlahović (born January 28, 1945 – died February 27, 2012) was a famous Croatian journalist and TV star. She worked in television for over 50 years! Helga was one of the most loved TV presenters in the 1980s. People also knew her as Helga Vlahović Pea and Helga Vlahović Brnobić during her marriages.

Early Life and Languages

Helga Vlahović was born in Zagreb, which is now in Croatia. Her father was from Hungary, and her mother was from Austria. Because of her family, Helga grew up speaking German at home. She also learned to speak English.

Helga's Television Career

Helga started working in television in 1964. She joined Zagreb Radio and Television, which was part of a bigger network called Yugoslav Radio Television. At the same time, she was studying German, English, and art history at the University of Zagreb.

Becoming a TV Star

By 1966, Helga became a main presenter for many fun TV shows. She hosted popular programs like TV Magazin. She also presented many musical shows. In 1968, she helped run a big song festival in Poland. Later, in 1971, she hosted another music festival in the Netherlands.

In 1972, Helga hosted a morning talk show called Good Day, Yugoslavia. She also led music shows like Svjetla pozornice (which means Stage Lights) in 1977 and 1978. From 1978 to 1980, she helped organize Jadranski susreti (Adriatic Reunion). This was a fun competition show, similar to Jeux Sans Frontières.

International Shows and Eurovision

Helga also worked on international TV projects. In 1984 and 1988, she helped create musical travel shows. These shows were called Vienna Salutes Zagreb, Zagreb Salutes Vienna and Dubrovnik-Stuttgart. They were for people who had moved away from Yugoslavia for work. The shows helped them feel connected to their home country.

Because Helga had so much experience with music shows and spoke great English, she got a very special job. In 1990, she was chosen to host the Eurovision Song Contest 1990 in Zagreb. She hosted it with Oliver Mlakar. This happened because Yugoslavia had won the contest the year before!

War Reporting and Health Shows

When Yugoslavia broke apart in 1991, a war started in Croatia. Helga quickly began working on TV shows about the war. She led the "war information programming" for the new HRT channel. She continued this important work until the war ended in 1995.

In 1996, Helga started her own TV show called Govorimo o zdravlju (We Talk About Health). This show taught people about many health and wellness topics. Helga officially retired in 2006. However, she still appeared on TV until her very last broadcast on January 1, 2012.

Her second daughter, Karla Brnobić, was born in 1982. Karla's father was Miljenko Brnobić, a brain surgeon who passed away in 1997.
